Metuchen, NJ — Expansion has come to the Southwest Conference of United Women’s Soccer (UWS) as the San Antonio Runners join the conference for the upcoming 2022 campaign. The team will showcase UWS talent at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex, a 5,000 seat multi purpose stadium located East of San Antonio’s downtown Riverwalk attraction.
“We are excited to welcome the San Antonio Runners to United Women’s Soccer,” said Commissioner Joe Ferrara. “The region has excellent players and the Runners are providing them with the opportunity to compete at the national pro-am level.”
Founded in 2018, San Antonio Runners SC are based out of San Antonio, Texas. The club began with a men’s UPSL team, and is now expanding to the women’s game. The club’s mission is to enhance the lives of those within the San Antonio community by developing and educating elite professionals. As a natural next step for the club, they will be providing women players the opportunity to compete at the national pro-am level to help prepare them for their college careers and beyond.
“We are extremely excited to add soccer related opportunities for the women in our community and we are looking forward to growing together with United Women’s Soccer,” said Executive Director Mason Rankin.
Lance Carlisle has been appointed Head Coach of the UWS Team. In addition to serving as a Director of Player Development for the Runner’s UPSL Men’s side, he is the assistant coach at Schreiner University. He is also Head Coach at Our Lady of the Hills High School, where he led his team to win a District Championship title in his first season with the program.
San Antonio Runners will play their home games at Wheatley Heights Sports Complex (200 Noblewood Dr. San Antonio, TX 78220). Open Tryouts will be held on Saturday, April 30 from 10am – 5pm.
