UWS Stadium Showcase Semi #2: Detroit City FC holds off Lansing United

The inaugural City women’s side records 2-1 victory to advance to Sunday’s final

HAMTRAMCK, MI – Detroit City FC earned their place in the United Women’s Soccer 2020 Stadium Showcase Final on Sunday afternoon, squeaking out a 2-1 victory over Lansing United in the second game of the Showcase. Kenna White’s 74th minute goal was the deciding factor in the victory, breaking a 1-1 stalemate and launching DCFC past the visiting United.

The game marked two historic firsts for the DCFC women’s side – the first time playing at historic Keyworth Stadium and the first-ever women’s victory for the club. It may also be the first and only time that the club has an eight-minute smoke delay to start the game, even without fans in the stadium. Smokey The Bot also made its Keyworth debut last night (courtesy of Northern Guard Supporters, one of DCFC’s supporters groups), as the world’s first AI smoke deploying robot covered the pitch with smoke prior to kickoff.

Detroit City FC will face off against Midwest United FC in the final, to be held on Sunday, July 26th at Keyworth Stadium beginning at 6:00pm EDT. United drubbed Livonia City 9-0 in the first game. The two teams previously met in a friendly on July 17th, with United scoring the final three goals of the match en route to a 3-1 victory.

Lansing will play Livonia City in the third-place match at 3:00pm EDT.

Le Rouge netted their first home goal in club history in the 21st minute on an absolute golazo from Lilian Lucas. Bri Rogers got the party started with a solid tackle and turn in the midfield, finding Lucas 25 yards from goal. The University of Illinois midfielder took one touch to her left, and rocketed her effort towards the far post for the 1-0 advantage.

Lansing nearly answered back in the 24th minute, as a turnover deep in DCFC territory gave United a golden opportunity on the counter. The one-time effort on a ball played across the box was knocked wide.

City was inches from tacking on a second in the 28th minute, as Kenna White took in a loose ball off a DCFC throw-in, and came *this close* to bending it in at the far post. DCFC settled for a 1-0 lead entering the break.

The Hoops finally pulled level in the 53rd minute off a corner kick. A flicked on header from Grace Philpotts slowly bounced towards the far post and found twine, squaring the game at one apiece.

Lucas came close to finding her second of the match for Le Rouge just two minutes later. A looping ball into the box squarely found the midfielder’s chest, but her left-footed one-time effort sailed over the crossbar.

DCFC broke the deadlock in the 83rd minute, utilizing a late high-press to force a mistake from the Lansing ‘keeper. Defender Sydney Blomquist, who was in attack mode for much of the second half, forced an error and pushed the ball forward to Kenna White. White calmly rolled in the deciding goal for the 2-1 final.
