Metuchen, NJ – Expansion news continues to build in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) as a new organization has been added to the 2022 Southeast Conference lineup. FC Birmingham will be the first-ever Alabama-based team in UWS history. The club will be providing women the opportunity to play at the pro-am level and showcase their skills on a national scale.
“We are ecstatic to welcome FC Birmingham to the Southeast Conference of United Women’s Soccer,” said League Commissioner Joe Ferrara. “We want to continue to support organizations that are starting a UWS team where one didn’t exist before.”
FC Birmingham was founded in 2020 as a grassroot organization in Birmingham, Alabama. The Mission of FC Birmingham is to provide a clear and realistic pathway for athletes to live their dream of playing soccer at the College or Professional Level, by focusing, not only on athletic success, but also personal and academic development and achievement. The club has a semi-professional men’s team that competes in the Premier Pioneer League which is an affiliate the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA).
The FC Birmingham Youth Academy currently competes in the Alabama State Soccer Association with 8 teams and 130 players. The club is expecting significant growth in 2022 and beyond due to their club model and the market of players looking for a clear path to pro-am they are providing. FC Birmingham strives to break down the financial barriers that hinder players from competing in high level leagues while including players from all areas of the community and socio economic backgrounds.
“I am extremely excited to join the UWS and be able to offer an opportunity for women in our area to play soccer at a higher level,” said club co-owner Mea Walk. “Who knows, we may uncover the next professional in Birmingham…”
