The Edmonton, Alberta region is home to newest UWS franchise

METUCHEN, NJ – Expansion has recently become a major buzzword in United Women’s Soccer (UWS) news with teams and conferences being added to the national pro-am league at breakneck speed. From the Southwest to the Southeast all the way up to the East, the newest league franchise is further West. North of the border to be more exact as St. Albert Soccer Association (SASA) Impact FC will bring UWS action to the Greater Edmonton, Alberta region and the West Conference this upcoming season.

A very familiar face will lead SASA Impact FC in their inaugural season. Two-time UWS Coach of the Year Troye Flannery will serve as the team’s Head Coach & General Manager. SASA is a respected regional club program actively involved in the Edmonton Minor Soccer Association (EMSA) at the youth level. Players from St. Albert, Edmonton and surrounding areas enjoy professional fitness sessions and academy training under the direction of licensed coaches, access to premier fields, facilities and more.

“We are delighted to accept another Canadian team into United Women’s Soccer,” said UWS Commissioner Joe Ferrara. Jr. “Troye Flannery helped build the Calgary franchise into arguably the best organization in all of UWS and we anticipate SASA to follow suit under his leadership.”

“This is a significant opportunity for women in the game at all levels, it is an extension of our pathway and one in which we aspire to facilitate opportunity for female players, coaches, officials and more,” said Flannery. “We will ensure accessibility for all within our region and are excited to work with our governing bodies to ensure this intent is acted upon.”

Troye Flannery is the first-ever two-time UWS Coach of the Year selection. This honor goes alongside his three straight seasons as West Conference COTY – another singular mark. He led his now-former team Calgary Foothills Women’s FC to their second consecutive West championship in 2019. Flannery has filled up his awards cabinet over the past few years. The University of Calgary mentor was honored as the Canada West and U SPORTS (the national governing body of university sport in Canada) Coach of the Year in Fall 2018.

“I can not express enough how excited I am for what is the near future,” said Flannery. “Lots of work to do but based on my previous experience with the Foothills WFC franchise, I know the standards offered by the league, the conference and all the people behind the scenes are truly next level. Special thanks to SASA, ASA, CSA, UWS for all the support in this process.”

The St. Albert Soccer Association is a non-profit organization that strives to offer soccer programs for all ages and levels of skill and interest. With approximately 5,000 registered players each year in their indoor and outdoor seasons, SASA offers programs for child, youth & adult players in both community and competitive leagues. The club is proud to be one of seven Alberta Clubs to be a Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) National Youth License Member. Reil Recreation Park in St. Albert, AB will serve as the team’s home facility.

“Having a franchise in the UWS is a massive step for our club to take in extending the pathway for female athletes in our region,” said SASA Executive Director & Impact FC Sporting Director/Owner Chris Spaidal. “We are committed to providing opportunities for all females to meet their needs in achieving their potential as players, while ensuring participation can be maximized within our structure. This is a very exciting venture for our entire organization to undertake and we are thankful for Troye in guiding us at this step.”
