Metuchen, NJ — An exciting campaign unfolded in the West Conference this season, as the absence of conference playoffs led to a regular season with added stakes. Ultimately, it was SC Blue Heat who emerged from a tight conference race, and dominated the UWS National Championship Tournament on the way to a second UWS title. Blue Heat were led by the Thompson sisters, Alyssa and Gisele, who split the West Conference player of the year awards.

West Conference Defensive Player of the Year — D Gisele Thompson (SC Blue Heat)

The West Conference Defensive Player of the Year award goes to 15-year-old Gisele Thompson, who proved a sturdy presence at the back for SC Blue Heat but also contributed crucially to the attack. She notched a goal and an assist in three regular-season games. A US under-16 international, Thompson proved a crucial presence for SC Blue Heat in the National Championship Tournament as well, scoring in the semifinal and adding an assist in the final.

West Conference Offensive Player of the Year — F — Alyssa Thompson (SC Blue Heat)

The 2021 Gatorade High School Player of the Year rolled her dominance at the high school level into the summer for SC Blue Heat. She found the back of the net twice in three regular-season games to help her side narrowly claim the West Conference title in the regular season. The US under-18 international also scored in the national semifinal to set Blue Heat up for a big performance in the title game.

West Conference Coach of the Year Leonardo “Luty” Neveleff (SC Blue Heat FC)

The UWS National Champions complete their clean sweep of the West Conference awards, with Leonardo Neveleff claiming the Coach of the Year honors. Neveleff, a former professional player himself with Estudiantes in Argentina, took the job in 2018 and has seen plenty of success — none greater than his achievements this season. Blue Heat won the conference title with a record of four wins and two draws, but truly asserted dominance at the national tournament, where they outscored their two opponents by a 9-0 aggregate score.
